5 Quick Tips to Help You Save on Electricity

by VoiceofPlay 15. January 2013 13:08

Have you heard the latest? Eskom has applied for a 16% annual electricity tariff increase for the next 5 years! So what exactly does that mean for us?

If Eskoms application is approved, we will see (and feel) electricity prices increase from 61c/kWh to R1,28/kWh. That’s just over double the current electricity price!

But don’t stress - as much as we love giving you the chance to win FREE Cash, Car, Gadget and Getaway prizes – we love making sure that you also get the latest deals and best tips to help make life a little more fun and little more easier!

5 Quick Tips to Help You Save on Electricity

1.       Unplug Small Appliances

Small appliances like microwaves, kettles and coffee makers still use low levels of voltage when plugged into the wall socket but not in use. By unplugging these small appliances while they’re not in use can save you money. And yes, this includes removing your cellphone charger from the wall socket when not in use.

2.       Change Your Light Bulbs

A lot of houses and flats are still fitted with halogen light bulbs. By replacing the halogen light bulbs in your house with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) you can save on electricity and reduce your household electricity usage, saving you money.

3.       Insulate Your Geyser Rather Than Switching it Off

When you switch your geyser off, the water temperature drops drastically and requires more energy to heat up the water when you turn it on again – pretty much the same amount of energy used by keeping your geyser on. Rather insulate your geyser with a geyser blanket to help keep the water at the required temperature by using less energy. Only turn your geyser off if you’re going away for longer than 2 days.

4.       Cook Smart

When boiling water on your stove (electronic or gas) make sure to put a lid on the pot to speed up the process. Not only does this save electricity but also saves you time. You can even re-use the boiling water before it cools to boil eggs – just a thought.

5.       Clean Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator uses more electricity than all your other kitchen appliances combined. By brushing and vacuuming the coils on the bottom or back of your refrigerator at least twice a year, you can improve its efficiency by up to 50%.

And for the justplay addicts out there that love to WIN prizes like R50, 000 Cash, an iPhone 5, a Trip Around the World, a range of Vouchers and even Kid and Baby prizes like a Year Supply of Nappies and Kiddies Car Seat – you can save money on your electricity by switching off your PC’s or Laptops and play to win awesome prizes on our justplay mobi site.
