More than just a gaming
platform, Xbox Live has become one of the top competitors in the media services
industry, rivaling Amazon and iTunes, according to a recent report. While the
console was originally designed by Microsoft to compete with the PlayStation
and Nintendo gaming consoles, more and more users are logging in to watch
videos and listen to music.
Microsoft reported that of
the number of hours spent on Xbox Live, less than 50% was spent on gaming,
while other media had grown in use by more than 30%. In fact, the report
mentioned a total of 150 hours were spent on average a month watching TV with
Xbox Live.
Xbox Live’s popularity is
crucial to the success of Microsoft as it will become available on Windows for
PC and Windows Phone OS for smartphones. There has even been talk of offering
the Xbox Live component of the Xbox without the console by means of a
set-top-box.
